John McAfee found dead in Barcelona prison

John McAfee, the founder of the company behind McAfee Antivirus, has been found dead according to reports from Reuters, El Mundo, El País, and others. He was being held in a Barcelona prison, and the Catalan Department of Justice said his death was probably due to suicide. McAfee’s lawyers have confirmed his death to Reuters and The New York Times, one of whom said it was “the result of a vicious plot to keep the man in prison for so long.

McAfee had been detained, awaiting deportation to the US, since his arrest in October 2020. He faces charges of tax evasion and has been charged with fraud in connection with a cryptocurrency pump and a garbage disposal scheme. Spanish courts have agreed to release him this morning with an opportunity to appeal, according to Reuters and El Mundo.

McAfee’s story over the past decade has been in the news. He released a drug-containing video in which he did not include McAfee Antivirus, claiming that he had created a machine that blocked the NSA’s surveillance, working for the president – twice, in 2016 and 2020. You are a well-known cryptocurrency promoter, who once said to charge $ 105,000 for each promotional tweet, if you wanted McAfee to increase your cryptocurrency or first coin donation on the Twitter platform.

In 2014, Intel re-launched the anti-McAfee software and replaced it with “Intel Security.” In response, McAfee told the BBC he was thankful that “the world’s worst software” was no longer linked to his name. McAfee later sued Intel after it warned him that naming a new cyber security company after him would be a breach of the trademark. McAfee later agreed to an agreement with Intel, saying he would not use his name in connection with any of the products or services he uses.

McAfee has a history of run-ins on law enforcement. He, his family, and members of his security forces were arrested by Belize police in 2012, after being charged with drugs and weapons. He continued to flee later that year, after Belize police announced he was wanted in connection with the murder of his neighbor.

The story became one of the focus of the 2016 Showtime documentary, which sought to prove that McAfee was not only involved in this murder, but also in other criminal activities. As recently as 2019, McAfee called the case against him “absurd,” and refused to pay the $ 25 million fine he was charged with. He also claimed that he had more than $ 200 million in his lawsuits, but he did not pay any of them.

In recent years, McAfee said he was fleeing from the CIA, writing a picture of himself in a boat with a gun. McAfee also posted tweets several times, once after his arrest in October, that he would not commit suicide, and those tweets have already led to conspiracy theories about his death.

The U.S. Department of Justice has told The Verge it has no comment on the matter, sending it to Spanish authorities.
